UPMC Hospitals Offer Diabetes Awareness Day Activities


WHAT: Residents in Blair and Bedford counties are invited to hear experts on diabetes management, obtain blood and wellness screenings, attend healthy cooking demonstrations and more for Diabetes Awareness Day at UPMC Bedford Memorial and UPMC Altoona.

WHERE: UPMC Bedford Memorial, 10455 Lincoln Highway, Everett; Cafeteria

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 12

Highlights include: Blood screenings, foot and eye exams, “Ask the Specialist” sessions with certified diabetes educator, exercise physiologist and nutritionist.

9 a.m., “Diabetes Together,” presented by A1C Champion

10 a.m., “Cooking demonstration” by UPMC registered dietitian Sana Dicey, R.D.M.

Multiphasic blood screening includes a series of 28 tests, including cholesterol and triglycerides, and costs $25. Additional tests and fees:
  • Urinalysis: $3 (optional)
  • HbA1c: $5 (optional)
  • TSH: $5 (optional)
  • PSA: $10 (optional)
WHERE: UPMC Altoona, 620 Howard Ave., G Building on hospital campus, Multipurpose Rooms 1 and 2

WHEN: 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 12

If you have diabetes, are at-risk for developing diabetes or care for someone who has diabetes, come learn more about managing diabetes and living a healthy life.

This fair will include:
  • Speakers on managing diabetes
  • Foot care for diabetics
  • Nutrition and diabetes and a cooking demonstration
  • Foot screenings by Altoona Family Physicians
  • Osteoporosis, balance and blood pressure screenings
  • Information on:
    • Sleep
    • Wound care
    • Vascular effects of diabetes
    Diabetes equipment and supply vendors will be on site
