“The annual Women’s Health and Wellness event covers all aspects of wellness for women, who tend to put their needs behind everyone else’s in the family,” said Dana Shade, Community Education Coordinator, UPMC Altoona. “We will have health professionals offering pointers for better physical and mental wellness, as well as alternative health practices, such as Reiki and yoga.”

UPMC Altoona departments will have information available on the following topics:
  • Women’s health and wellness
  • Osteoporosis screening
  • Mammography information
  • Women and heart disease
  • Bariatric surgery
  • Blood pressure screenings
  • Stroke prevention
  • Women’s breast issues and health
  • Lactation services: breastfeeding and safe sleep for infants
  • Healthy eating
  • Female incontinence and pelvic floor rehabilitation
  • Cancer prevention and information
  • Drug and alcohol issues
  • The benefits of essential oils, yoga, Reiki and more
  • Community services

New this year is an over-sized, inflated colon that allows participants to walk through and learn about this fascinating organ and how to keep it healthy.

“UPMC Altoona has collaborated with Blair Gastroenterology Associates of Altoona to help increase the rate of colon screenings for area residents,” said Anita Grimes, R.N., who is co-chairing the effort to increase colon cancer prevention efforts as part of the “80 Percent by 2018” campaign.

In addition to the giant, walk-through colon, UPMC and Blair Gastroenterology Associates of Altoona will have information on digestive health, prevention, screening options and treatment information on various bowel diseases, especially colon wellness.

NOTE TO MEDIA: Prearrangements must be made by contacting Grace Rzodkiewicz at 412-232-5570 or rzodkiewiczgk@upmc.edu by May 9.
