UPMC Altoona Foundation Raises More Than $87,000 for Patient Care
ALTOONA, Pa., Feb. 8, 2017 UPMC Altoona Foundation raised more than $87,000 at its annual Winter Splendor event Jan. 20 to benefit patient care at UPMC Altoona.
“We had a record number of guests with nearly 900 attendees,” said Tim Balconi, president of UPMC Altoona Foundation. “We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who attended and to our co-chairs, Dr. Dave and Cristin Burwell and Dr. Grant and Kathy Hormell.
The event included a basket auction, a live auction, and a special fund-raiser for the UPMC Altoona Breast Health Center, which raised $22,000.
“Our committee and volunteers did a fantastic job at expanding the popularity of the event,” Balconi said. “We thank everyone who participated, including our sponsors.”
During the evening, the UPMC Altoona Foundation recognized the 2016 Healthcare Honors Award recipients Ann Benzel, Dr. Vijay Janakiraman, and Catherine Sprouse, R.N.
Ann Benzel of Hollidaysburg has served as a trustee of the UPMC Altoona Hospital since 2004. She also is a trustee of the UPMC Altoona Foundation, having served as chairperson from 2008 to 2011. Ann’s dedication to the hospital and its Foundation are hallmarks of her distinguished career in supporting and leading area not-for-profit agencies.
Dr. Vijay Janakiraman of Hollidaysburg received the honor for his work as a cardiologist, leader and mentor since he opened his internal medicine practice in 1979. In 1983, he opened his cardiology practice now known as UPMC Altoona Pleasant Valley Cardiology, 1528 Pleasant Valley Blvd.
Catherine Sprouse, R.N., received her award for being a champion of quality care for every patient. Retired since 2014, Sprouse served as the director of UPMC Altoona Case Management culminating her 44 years of nursing service to patients.
